Our First Monkey Speak
Dave and I enjoyed Monkey Speak at the Flying Monkey Arts Theater this evening. We got there late because I had never been to a reader’s open mic night, and I spent too long on my makeup. All I could think of was old films of beatnik bars, with snaps and black turtlenecks and raccoon eyes. I knew it wouldn’t be like that, but I was having too much fun with my imaginings, so that’s exactly how I went. It takes a bit for a 42 year old that doesn’t wear makeup at all very often to pull that kind of look together! Actually, the results looked more like something out of Rocky Horror, but it was still fun.
We tip toed into the theater. Did I mention my high heeled black leather boots that echoed through the halls of Lowe Mill like chipper little sonic booms? There was a reading in progress: a dramatic reading, complete with yells and stomps. I really could have walked with purpose and remained unnoticed. Timing is everything.
The readings progressed through the evening in a fun and quirky mixture of styles, reflective of the individuality of the writers. High points included readings that ranged from dark fairy tales, to lyrical poetry interspersed with a cappella singing, to a hilarious short story of comic insecurity in epic proportions. I’m thinking we were hooked enough to go back again next month.
I’ll have to take something to read for the December 4th Monkey Speak. We should get there on time, too. I might keep the turtleneck, but I think I’ll skip the makeup.
Joan,
Sounds like i’m missing out on quite a bit that’s going on in Huntsville. I’m elated to see someone else blogging and keeping Huntsville in the eyes of the public. Keep it up.

Thanks much for the feedback, Reid. I so enjoyed meeting you at this week’s B&B event!
I’m horribly sorry for not replying sooner. Within a few hours of getting home I came down with a flu that knocked my feet out from under me. I’ve done very little more than drink meds and sleep for the past few days. Based on incubation rules, I imagine I picked up my virus over the weekend for it to kick in Tuesday night. I sure hope I didn’t help spread it further, but I had no clue until later that evening.
